The FTCE Spanish K-12 subject examination consists of sections that will test speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as knowledge of pedagogy and Spanish linguistic structures, vocabulary, and culture. The overall test encompasses 80 questions.
Each multiple-choice question will contain four response options, which will be answered by bubbling in choice A, B, C, or D. Test questions in the listening and speaking sections require language laboratory equipment.
For the speaking portion of the test, candidates will perform speaking tasks in Spanish in response to a scenario, example, situation, or statement. Candidates will need to be able to respond in Spanish to a variety of topics that demonstrate appropriate speaking knowledge in various areas of school, work, and everyday living, as well as respond to tasks relating to Spanish culture, ideas, concepts, and topics.
For the classroom instruction speaking portion, candidates will hear a prompt in English that is also on the screen and will have 10 seconds to prepare a response and 20 seconds to record in Spanish the directions that would be given to students. For everyday situations, candidates will be asked to record in Spanish a description or the answer to a question. For each item, two or three topics will be presented in English on the tape and the test booklet. Candidates will then have 15 seconds to select a topic and prepare a response. Candidates will then have 60 seconds to record a response. Scoring guidelines range from 1 to 6, with 1 being the lowest and 6 demonstrating polished pronunciation and correct grammar usage.
Listening and comprehension will also be tested. Candidates will listen to recorded messages spoken in either formal or informal Spanish of no longer than 3 minutes in length to test listening skills. After each passage is played, two to four questions are to be answered . The multiple-choice options will appear in Spanish. Passages may be about a news item, short lecture, a report, dialogue, interview, or similar.
