Florida Educational Leadership Examination (FELE)

Instructional leader candidates seeking certification in Educational Leadership within the state of Florida are required to pass the FELE examination, as per the Florida State Board of Education. (See Rule 6A-4.00821, FAC for more information.) The examination is for potential school principals and similar positions.

A new FELE examination was implemented beginning January 1, 2009. The new exam has revised materials, which include competencies and skills, written performance assessment, and an updated overall test structure. Candidates must take and pass all three subtests to receive certification. If one subtest is not passed, only that subtest must be retaken, as long as all subtests passed are from the new FELE.

The three-part examination is aligned with the 10 Principal Leadership Standards. Each subtest includes multiple-choice questions, and Subtest 3 includes a written performance assessment to determine competency in data analysis and written communication.

The three sections include:

1. Instructional Leadership-Instructional Leadership; Managing the Learning Environment; Learning, Accountability, and Assessment
2. Operational Leadership-Technology; Human Resource Development; Ethical Leadership; Decision-Making Strategies
3. School Leadership- Community and Stakeholder Partnerships; Diversity; Vision
