FTCE Reading K-12 Exam

The Reading K-12 subject examination consists of about 120 multiple-choice questions. Test-takers will receive a test booklet and a separate answer sheet. Question formats will include direct question, command, sentence completion, and scenario. Each question will contain four response options, which will be answered by bubbling in choice A, B, C, or D.

The test encompasses 13 core competencies, each with between 2 and 7 skill areas. Competencies are defined as areas of content knowledge, with skills being the behaviors that demonstrate those competencies. Competencies and skills incorporate the Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR) and the components of Florida's Formula for Reading Success; phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension; assessments to include screening, diagnostics, and progress monitoring; initial instruction; immediate intensive intervention; and addressing improved reading outcomes for Florida's students. Each competency is also assigned a percentage representing the approximate proportion of test items in that content area on the test. Together, the competencies and skills are representative of knowledge that has been determined by content specialists to be important for beginning teachers.

Test-takers will need to demonstrate knowledge of the theories and underlying assumptions of reading processes; emergent literacy; decoding, encoding, and related reading processes; reading fluency development; reading comprehension; content area reading and learning; literary genres, elements, and interpretations; diverse learners; reading assessments; print and nonprint media; classroom environments that support reading; research; and reading program supervision and administration.
