FTCE Hearing Impaired K-12 Exam
The Hearing Impaired K-12 subject examination consists of about 120 multiple-choice questions. Test-takers will receive a test booklet and a separate answer sheet. Question formats will include direct question, sentence completion, command, and scenario. A portion of the test will also involve viewing a video of an individual signing a basic message in English-based signs, American Sign Language (ASL), and Pidgin Signed English and then choosing the correct response. Each question will contain four response options, which will be answered by bubbling in choice A, B, C, or D.
The test encompasses 14 core competencies, each with between 2 and 12 skill areas. Competencies are defined as areas of content knowledge, with skills being the behaviors that demonstrate those competencies. Each competency is also assigned a percentage representing the approximate proportion of test items in that content area on the test. Together, the competencies and skills are representative of knowledge that has been determined by content specialists to be important for beginning teachers.
Test-takers will need to demonstrate knowledge of philosophical, historical, and legal foundations and their impact on the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing; the auditory mechanism and hearing loss and its impact upon communication and learning; language development and methods of communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; psychosocial aspects of students who are deaf or hard of hearing; deaf and family cultures and their impact on students who are deaf or hard of hearing; and service delivery models for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; the design, development, and implementation of Individual Educational Plans (IEPs), Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs), and Transition Individual Educational Plans (TIEPs).
Also: transitional services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; assessments appropriate for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; instructional strategies and modifications for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; unique technologies, media, and resources for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; content design and requirements for general education; professional communication, advocacy, and collaboration to meet the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing; and the ability to comprehend signing.
